St. Kitts has a stable, democratic government based on the British system. In 1983, the English speaking country of St. Kitts and Nevis gained its independence from the United Kingdom, but till this day, it remains a sovereign federal state. The Federation is a member of the British Commonwealth, under the rule of Queen Elizabeth of England, represented by a Governor General who is the Head of State and a 14 member National Assembly comprised of 11 elected representatives and three nominated senators. The Prime Minister is the leader of the majority party and has a Cabinet of seven other Ministers and an Attorney General. The St. Kitts Labor Party is currently the ruling party with the Honorable Dr. Denzil Douglas as the Prime Minister. The legal system is based upon English common law with the Privy Council in London being the ultimate appellate court.
